Farm and Ranch LegacyAs with all places, there is history to this land. It has been cared for by four generations of the Haerther, Huffman and Losh families who have a long-standing and positive presence in the Strasburg, Colorado community.
Our Family & Property History:
Patriarch Daryl Haerther and son-in-law Lonnie Losh came to Strasburg in 1969 and purchased 320 acres of dryland wheat ground north of town. Comanche Livestock Company, as the operation at Strasburg was named, was in the business of raising livestock.
During the 70’s, we acquired a pasture at Byers as well as a section of ground to the immediate south of the main farm. The pasture land had, over the years, been overgrazed. We reseeded parts of it and were judicious in its use. The section south of us, dryland wheat ground, was planted with native grass and put into the CRP program where it has remained for over 30 years. (This is the ground now called “The Grasslands at Comanche”.)
During the late 80’s and early 90’s, we expanded our livestock holdings. We had an opportunity to divide an irrigated farm at Byers into eight 35 acre parcels. Grandpa Daryl, with his experience in irrigated farming and pivots, was able to give four of these parcels a mini-pivot and a well. Throughout various acquisitions and subsequent sales, we followed the philosophy of being “good stewards of the land”. We always sought to improve the status of the land and its productive value for whatever purchases we made.
Commitment to a community:
As our family moved into the area, we became active members of the Strasburg community. Various family members have:
- Served on the board of directors of The First National Bank of Strasburg for over 25 years.
- Served on the Strasburg Sanitation and Water District board of directors for over 20 years.
- Helped form the Strasburg Parks and Recreation Department, served on its first board of directors, and is serving on the current board.
- Initiated a plan to build an assisted living community with the ability for residents to “age in place” in Strasburg. Three family members currently serve on the board of directors of this non-profit entity which provides senior apartments as well as assisted care living (download brochure pdf).
- Had two generations of family members serve on the Strasburg School Board.
- Served on a committee which successfully got a mill levy issue passed to build our newest school in 2006-07, Hemphill Middle School.
- Serves on the board of directors of Plains Medical Center.
- Serving as current president of the American Pride Co-op board of directors.
- Held various teaching and high school coaching positions over the past 30 years.
- Been actively involved in church and school events.
- Hosted golf tournaments as fund raisers for the high school girl’s basketball program.
While raising our children, our hope for them was to develop roots and wings. Four of the five grandchildren have moved from the farm, however, a part of them will always be on the farm. The fifth came back and his two daughters are the fourth generation at Comanche Livestock Company.
